IOC president Kirsty Coventry says sports cut from 2032 Brisbane Games could return in future

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Sports and medal events cut from the 2032 Brisbane Olympics program will have a path to return at future Summer Games, IOC president Kirsty Coventry told sports leaders on Wednesday.

Associated Press

Coventry’s reassurance to the annual meeting of Summer Games sports bodies came after shewarned in February of “uncomfortable” talksahead to make future Olympic hosting more efficient.

The International Olympic Committee aims to finalize within months the list of sports on the Brisbane program that Coventry previously told their leaders will be fewer than the 36 being played at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“There is a path (back), it’s not just an end,” the IOC president told The Associated Press on Wednesday on the sidelines of the assembly of the summer sports group known asASOIF.

Brisbane also could have fewer than the 353 medal events being competed for at Los Angeles.

“I know that not everyone will be happy,” Coventry acknowledged to ASOIF members Wednesday, adding "the goal is not to destroy any sport.”

Coventry also met Tuesday with ASOIF members and assured them “we don’t have specific numbers” as targets for the sports and events program for Brisbane.

The most important metric shapes to be the number of venues needed as the IOC looks to manage costs for hosts.

“The cost and complexity comes when you start adding additional venues for single purpose events,” Coventry told the AP. “That’s where we need to look and say: ‘How could we change that?’”

A major step toward streamlining the program for Brisbane and beyond is a June 24 meeting of the full IOC membership in Lausanne that should agree a process for evaluating sports and events.

A list of sports at Brisbane could be confirmed in September, with a longer timeline to confirm the detailed program of medal events.

Sports at risk?

Modern pentathlonhas long been seen as vulnerable to losing its historic Olympic status, whilesports added to the LA program— including flag football, lacrosse and squash — will be competing for their place in Brisbane before having their showcase in 2028.

The2036 Olympics hosting contest was pausedby Coventry last year in the first big decision of her new presidency. Qatar is widely seen as a strong contender for a project likely to be spread in the Middle East region, which has been targeted during the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran.

Russia allows central bank, top lender Sberbank to down drones

May 27 (Reuters) - Russia has passed a law allowing its central bank and other financial institutions to operate their ‌own defence systems and arm staff to repel drone attacks, ‌a document published by the lower house of parliament showed.

Reuters

Ukraine struck the central bank's office in Sevastopol in Crimea with a missile on Wednesday, local governor Mikhail Razvozhaev said, alleging that it was a British-made Storm Shadow missile. He added that the building was on fire.

Ukraine has been regularly ‌striking Russia with drones since Moscow launched the war in February 2022, with energy infrastructure frequently targeted as Kyiv aims to deprive Moscow of revenues in order to bring the conflict to an end.

Drone defence systems could be located next to the central bank, the country's biggest bank Sberbank, and the Russian Cash Collection Association. Staff at ‌those institutions would be permitted to be armed.

The institutions would handle the cost of drone defence themselves, Anatoly Aksakov, the head of the financial committee in Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, was quoted as saying by the RBC news outlet.

The attack on ‌the central bank's office in Sevastopol was the first on a major central bank office since the start of the war. There were no reported attacks ‌on major Sberbank offices.

On Tuesday, Alexander Shokhin, head of Russia's most powerful business lobby, told President Vladimir Putin companies are ready to finance the purchase of heavier weapons and electronic systems to defend ‌their infrastructure from drone attacks.

"The teenage years are tough," she said in an interview onLive with Kelly and Markin May 2023. "It's challenging. You have this baby for a while and then it's like, your best little friend who loves being with you all the time, and then all of a sudden it's like, 'Get out of my room.' "

“They are challenging everything you say and everything you do and everything you are, and that's what it is,” she added. “You have to kind of just ride the waves."

"I think it's particularly hard on moms, because they always love dad, they're always like, 'Dad's the best!' — and I was like that with my dad too!" she continued, turning to her mom,Guadalupe Rodríguez, who joined her on the show. "And my mom told me, and I'll say it to you right now, on TV in front of everybody. I understand you so much more now."

Elsewhere in the interview, Lopez commented on how she parents differrently to her mother, revealing that she was "looser" than her mom.

"I think my mom, for a long time, was a stay-at-home mom, and I've always been a working mom, so that right there is a very different thing,' she continued. "And also she was 20 years old — by the time she was 26, she had 3 kids."

"So she was kind of a kid raising kids. And I had my kids when I was 38, so I had them much later, so I was more of an adult at that time," said Lopez. "We kind of grew up together," she concluded.
